Odyssey Car Battery Buying Guide

Everyone faces the need to change his/her car battery someday or the other. But it is wise to choose the best of all to let those changes occur less frequently. For this, you need some tips and knowledge about the products. Here are a few suggestions that will help you to select the right option for your vehicle.

So go through the following considerations for choosing batteries that last longer and perform better.

1. Get the Right Fit

It is no use getting even a great battery home if it does not fit your car’s battery tray. So the first and foremost need is to take care of the basic features, one of which is the size. Make sure you are researching only those batteries that are a perfect fit for your vehicle.

This includes you checking all the three – its length, its width as well as its height. You will need to check the terminal locations too. The reason why all this is so very crucial is, right size enables security and protection against vibrations. And this, in turn, prevents accidents.

To help you with this, you can either check with your mechanic or with Odyssey’s case, you can use their online battery search engine. Choose the right options in their filter and it display’s the right battery for your car.

2. Considering the CCA and CA

Next, we have the power requirements. This is one of the most essential features of any car battery. You need to check its CCA or Cold Cranking Amps and CA or Cranking Amps. More CCA will mean the battery is good enough for cold weather conditions.

For your information, CCA represents the required energy for starting the vehicle at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Similarly, CA refers to the energy required for starting your car at a temperature of 31 degrees Fahrenheit.

Odyssey has batteries with varied CCA and CA among its three variants. However, if CCA is your concern, you would be better off with the Pro and Performance series.

3. How Fresh is the Battery?

A fresh car battery refers to one that was recently manufactured. Purchasing batteries more than six months old is not a good deal. Sometimes, batteries are kept in storage, and they remain there for quite a while. As that time increases, the freshness and the effectiveness of the product lowers down.

The point is, how in the world are you going to know when it was manufactured. There is a way to let that happen. Every car battery in the market comes with a code, consisting of letters as well as numbers. If it doesn’t, at least it will have a shipping code. So you can check it this way: A/5 may represent January/2015, while B/4 will refer to February/2014.

With Odyssey, you can find it in the manual or decode using the serial number. For Example, if the serial number is 06GCS061250340, the manufacturing date is the 125th day of the year 2006.

You may need to know who makes Odyssey batteries. Well, the answer is EnerSys Energy Products Inc. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of EnerSys and has headquarters in Reading, Pennsylvania.

4. Take Away Home, the One that Needs Less Maintenance!

Everyone prefers the ones with the requirement for less maintenance. But, you should still check the batteries even if they are maintenance-free products. Odyssey batteries are maintenance-free only, and being AGM, there is no need for any watering as well.

If you wish to know the difference between the two, a maintenance-free battery comes with sealing for protection. Its liquid electrolyte will run throughout the battery and will not require filling. Contrarily a lead-acid battery comes unsealed with caps. It is to allow the driver to fill water as and when needed.

5. What Warranty Does Your Car Battery Give?

All batteries come with a different warranty. And we all wish to go for the longest one. There is nothing unwise in going this way. However, one may also note another feature, a prorated period. Not all brands and stores allow for a prorated warranty.

The Extreme and Performance series in Odyssey both offer a 3-year warranty while the Pro series offers a 4-year warranty. If any issues within this time period, you can exchange the battery at the store where you bought it.

6. What’s Your Purpose?

When you are about to purchase a battery, you have a purpose in mind. So select the product based on that. This is also among the necessary points as you may get a good choice home but fail to use it in an optimum manner due to the difference in the features.

Different types of car batteries suit different conditions. So choose the one suitable for your specific needs. You may need one that can allow frequent long drives. Or you may require a battery only for short distance travels. When it comes to Odyssey batteries, they are AGM or Absorbed Glass Mat batteries. Hence they can be used for short and long distances without any trouble.

7. High Durability for a Longer Service Life

Nobody wants a battery that asks for a change every half year. If you are choosing a battery now, get the one with high durability like the Odyssey battery. So you will not have to make changes time and again. You may try getting one of the same age as your vehicle.

Your battery should have a life of about 3 to 10 years. That will give enough time and space in life to use the product conveniently. The batteries by this brand can easily last 10 years as verified by most of its customers.

9. Fast Charging and Shock/Vibration Resistant

We have talked about the charging feature and shock resistance features of the models above. Of course, automotive vehicles always vibrate and can certainly get shocks. But these days, you can easily find products with great shock impact resistance as well as mechanical vibration proofing.

Odyssey batteries being AGM are encased, spill-proof, and also vibration resistant courtesy of its compressed AGM plate separators. It is advisable to choose a product with a rapid charging feature. Get a battery with a quality recharge system. It should have the capability of recharging entirely within three to six hours of time.

Conclusion

The 65-PC1750T Automotive and LTV Battery tops my list as the best battery mainly due to its amazing features. The others are also not far behind. Whatever model you select for your car, make sure the battery is in accordance with your needs and specifications. I hope that after going through this article, you will be better able to get the right product home.

The most important points we look for are the price and some specific features. Getting a good deal for a great product is the best. So take home the best Odyssey car battery for great satisfaction.

Why Optima Batteries?

Optima batteries are one of the best batteries to look out for when you are buying a car battery. They have been around for more than half a century, producing innovative batteries to generate efficient power in a short time. With a couple of inventions in their bucket, the brand continues to manufacture top quality batteries that consistently deliver results.

The company started its operations back in 1952. They are the first company to manufacture the first 100% maintenance-free lead-acid batteries that are still being used for military and commercial vehicles. They are also responsible for the first AGM batteries that deliver a high performance. On the same line, their Spiral Cell Technology is also one of the kind that you see only with Optima.

Another question I need to address here is, how long do optima car batteries last? Their batteries can last as long as 8 years in moderate, optimum conditions considering the vehicle’s condition. In any case, it can easily last 4 years.

3 Reasons for Choosing Optima

1. They Use Virgin Lead (99.99% Pure Lead)

The brand uses pure lead plates in their batteries. Usually, these are made of a lead alloy, which doesn’t conduct electricity as fast as the virgin one. Without the impurities in the way, these allow fast electricity flow, enabling a faster recharge and also long discharge time.

2. Their Spiral Cell Technology

Instead of the regular lead-acid battery where the plates float in the electrolyte solution, for AGM construction, the plates hold the fluid in place. The plates are tightly wound into spiral cells and are held in place inside the battery case. The intention of this design is to increase the surface area allowing the battery to offer resistance to impacts and also generate more power.

3. Their Specifications

Every battery proves its mettle through its specifications and going through with their claims. Optima ticks all the right boxes when it comes to the technicalities.

  • Case: The battery case is welded using special precision technology to preserve its contents. Hence the resultant package is a tightly sealed battery with no chances of spilling or leaking and also resistant to vibration.
  • Long Life: The above construction gives the battery durability and longer life. It is also resistant to high temperatures and the reason why the batteries last two times longer than its competitors.
  • Resistance to Vibration: The tightly wound cells placed strategically can withstand vibrations better than any other battery. Consequently, these are 15 times more resistant to vibrations and do not damage easily.
  • Resistance to the Harmful Aspects: The battery is of pure lead, hence corrosion-resistant and ideal for all extreme weather conditions.
  • Powerful Start: The construction also allows for more power during start-up in the first few seconds, which is the critical period.

Difference Between the Optima Batteries

Optima batteries come in three variants:

  1. RedTop Battery
  2. YellowTop Battery
  3. BlueTop Battery

Each of them has different specifications and are used in different applications. But, their construction and quality remain the same throughout.

RedTop Battery

RedTop Battery is a high-performance AGM battery ideal for daily needs. You can power your cars, SUVs, trucks, and other cars that need a powerful starting battery. But, your vehicle will also need a good alternator. If your car is modified with all the bells and whistles, you might want to opt for a RedTop as well.

It is designed to give strong blasts of power consistently for reliable ignition. They give the strongest 5-second burst of power you need to start your vehicle. It is spill-proof hence can also be used in off-road terrains.

YellowTop Battery

My favourite has been the XS Power High Output D6500. With a CA of 1100 and 174 reserve capacity minutes, the battery is quite impressive.

10. EverStart

EverStart gained momentum in the last couple of years and is only looking upwards in terms of performance batteries. They are available to buy from Walmart and manufactured by industry giants, Johnson Controls.

EverStart batteries are quite affordable but compete easily with batteries priced twice as much as them. They have both the lead-acid batteries and AGM batteries. If I have a bone to pick with them, I might say that their AGM range isn’t that impressive compared to the others.

EverStart car Batteries come in three variants, EverStart Plus, EverStart Value and EverStart Maxx, all three variants being the lead-acid batteries.

For my pick, I’d go with the EverStart Maxx Lead Acid Automotive Battery, Group Size T5 with its 650 CCA, maximum starting power and 3-year replacement warranty.

Conclusion

Just because I have listed 10 battery brands doesn’t mean you should go blindfolded into choosing one. Do your part of the research and identify one for your vehicle and especially your needs. Let me try answering a few questions here.

What is the best car battery brand? I’d go with Optima or Odyssey since they are pretty impressive with a consistency. Not far behind is the XS Power, in fact, I am seriously looking at it.

While I have curated this list with budget, midsize and expensive brands, which is the most expensive car battery? XS Power. It goes without saying. My pick from the brand is $420.99. None of the other brands come close to this range.
